Canon Australia has just published an aggressive press release that means to “shut down speculation” from detractors who think specs like 8K video are “a fantasy” that will be characteristically crippled by the camera brand.

When Canon announced the development of the EOS R5, the main response from the majority of photographers and filmmakers—so used to Canon crippling their creations with odd omissions (no 24p video) or painful limitations (a 1.7x crop in 4K)—was disbelief. IBIS the works in concert with lens stabilization, 20fps with the electronic shutter, 12fps with the mechanical shutter, two card slots, and the coup de grâce: 8K video recording.

Naturally, journalists, commenters, and YouTubers alike took to their respective platforms to claim that the camera’s most impressive spec would probably need to be crippled in some way. Perhaps a huge crop. Perhaps no Dual Pixel AF when shooting 8K.

Fortunately, none of this is true.

In addition to re-hashing the specs we already knew, the Canon Australia press release confirms three key specs:

  1. The EOS R5 will be able to shoot 8K 30p at full sensor width, i.e. no crop.
  2. All 8K modes the EOS R5 will support Dual Pixel AF.
  3. The EOS R5 will feature advanced animal AF that will be able to recognize animal eyes, but also the face and body when the eyes are not visible.

This is a highly uncharacteristic move by Canon, but it seems their marketers have had enough of the trash talk.

“Signalling a new phase of Canon 5-Series imaging and a revolution in the mirrorless full camera category,” reads the release, “Canon’s EOS R5 will offer every photographer – not just professionals – access to high-quality imaging, cutting-edge 8K movie recording, new approaches to in-body image stabilisation, and revolutionary subject detection and tracking performance features.”

Unfortunately, due to supply chain disruptions caused by the novel coronavirus, we may have to wait a little while longer before the camera is officially released; fortunately, it seems the wait will be 100% worth it. Canon is once again set to revolutionize hybrid shooting.
