Western Digital is showing off the world’s highest capacity, portable SSD at CES 2020. It’s the SanDisk 8TB SSD, and it’s small enough to be easily slipped into your pocket.
The prototype drive features a SuperSpeed USB 20Gbps interface that can quickly transfer a huge trove of photos and other files to and from the device.
“Inspired by consumers’ desire to capture rich content and keep it with them, Western Digital continues to push the boundaries of what’s possible with an 8TB SSD prototype,” Western Digital says. “Combining its expertise in flash memory with skillful design, the company continues to be at the forefront of developing revolutionary solutions that keep up with and surpass today’s consumer needs.”
The drive looks to build upon the success of SanDisk’s popular Extreme Portable SSD drives, which come in capacities of 250GB, 500GB, 1TB, and 2TB. No word yet on when we may see the 8TB drive hit the market or how much it will cost.
Just for reference, the 2TB Extreme Portable SSD is currently priced at $280, so you can bet the 8TB drive will cost quite a pretty penny if or when it does hit shelves.
